Ian Abbot's life was one devoted to poetry, but at the time of his early death in 1989 he had published only one collection of poems. To the complete text of that first book, 'Avoiding the Gods', this new volume adds poems from Abbot's archives in the National Library of Scotland - some carefully typed and preserved, destined for publication, others found as drafts, handwritten in notebooks - and those poems (ranging from Abbot's first appearance in the San Franciscan counter-culture arts journal Kayak in 1968 to a long standing relationship with Lines Review) published during the poet's lifetime, but uncollected into book form. In his Introduction, editor Richie McCaffery describes his aim as two-fold: to address the abrupt end of Abbot's poetry and to attempt to secure his reputation as a poet - to help to 'finish the picture' of his life and work.

They were intended to be delivered over two years. This two-volume collection, first published between 1844 and 1846, contains transcriptions of the Old English texts with facing-page translations by Benjamin Thorpe (1781/2-1870). A well-respected scholar with a strong interest in promoting the study of Old English, Thorpe produced an important edition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the Rolls Series (also reissued in this series). Volume 1 of the present work contains the sermons for the first year, focusing on important events in the church calendar.

This is part of a series which begins on 1 January 1784 with the hero of the American Revolution back at Mount Vernon under his own ""fig tree and vine"", and ends in September 1788 on the eve of his return to public life as president under the new Constitution. The Confederation Series is composed almost entirely of personal letters and includes very few official documents. Documents printed in Volume 1 reflect Washington's main concerns during the first months of peace. Many letters related directly to his resumption of the management not only of his house and farms at Mount Vernon, as well as of his tenanted land in Frederick and Berkeley counties and in Pennsylvania, but also of his vast holdings on the banks of the Great Kanawha and Ohio. Other letters deal with such things as the settlement of his military accounts, his activities as both president and determined reformer of the Society of the Cincinnati, and his preliminary notions about making the Potomac the connecting link between the East and the transmontane West.
